¡¡¡¡China has taken an active part in the UN activities
in the sphere of human rights. Since resuming its lawful seat
in the United Nations in 1971, China has sent its delegation
to attend every session of the UN Economic and Social Council
and of the UN General Assembly, and has taken an active part
in deliberation of human rights issues and stated its views
on the issue of human rights. At the same time, China has always
upheld justice and made unremitting efforts to safeguard the
right of third world countries to national self-determination
and to stop massive infringements on human rights. China is
playing an important role in the cause of international human
rights.
Different
cultures should learn from each other, joining hands in cooperation
for mutual development. As a bridge between hearts of people,
culture should serve to promote mutual understanding and friendship
between the Chinese and American peoples.
In order to commemorate the 50th
anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the
China Society for Human Rights Studies and the United Nations
Association of China co-sponsored the International Symposium
on World Human Rights Toward the 21st Century. It is the first
international human rights symposium initiated by the Chinese
academia and a high-level multilateral human rights dialogue
in China at the historical juncture to the next century as well.
It
is known that recognition of the inherent dignity and of the
equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family
is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world.
The peoples and Member States of the United Nations are devoting
themselves to achieve, in cooperation with the United Nations,
the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human
rights and fundamental freedoms
On
25 June 1993, representatives of 171 States adopted by consensus
the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action of the World
Conference on Human Rights, thus successfully closing the two-week
World conference and presenting to the international community
a common plan for the strengthening of human rights work around
the world.
In
1998, the General Assembly decided to proclaim 2001 as the International
Year of Mobilization against Racism, Racial Discrimination,
Xenophobia and Related Intolerance. This observance will help
to draw world attention to the objectives of the Conference
and to provide a momentum for further political commitment to
the elimination of racism and racial discrimination.
