   【Sound Bite】Soloman Mohmand,Car Accident Victim
Slurring, stuttering, wasn’t ready to be behind any motor vehicle.

  【VO】
Soliman’s symptoms are the sequela of a serious car accident.
On a night in June 2013, Mohmand got on a truck driven by Ethan Couch, a 16-year-old teenager from a local rich family, with six other juveniles. The three-ton pick-up truck was driven so fast that it made everyone on board nervous.

【Sound Bite】Soloman Mohmand, Car accident victim
All of our friends told him to stop driving and switch drivers. “Please stop, you’re driving too fast.”

  【VO】
Ethan Couch ignored all this. At the moment, a SUV with a flat tire stalled on a country road a few miles away, waiting for help. Several local residents and a driver passing by offered their assistance.
A few minutes later, the speeding pick-up truck turned this calm road into a inferno on the earth.

  【Sound Bite】911 call record
Witness: There’re four or five kids lying in streets.
Responder: Are you at the accident right now?
Witness: Oh my! Oh yes, there’s another child in the ditch. Oh my god!

  【VO】
Couch’s truck plowed into the crowd of people repairing the SUV along the road, at nearly twice the speed limit of 60 km/h without braking, and then had a head-on collision with another oncoming vehicle.

【Sound Bite】Richard Alpert, Prosecutor of Fort Worth, Texas
The people that were hit by the vehicle are… It’s just carnage. They are in pieces. Body parts are here, over there.

  【VO】
The accident killed four people and injured nine. Sergio Molina, the most severely wounded among the seven teenagers on Couch’s truck, was paralyzed. Soliman Mohmand was tossed out and landed ten meters away from the truck.

  【Sound Bite】Sultan Mohmand,  Soloman’s father
My wife was holding on till that moment she saw her son. Then she hit the ground and she fainted

  【VO】
According to police investigation, Couch had three records of driving under influence before this accident. The police later found a great number of empty liquor bottles in his house. Three hours after the car crash, his blood alcohol content remained three times the legal limit for adult drivers in Texas.

【Sound Bite】Richard Alpert, Prosecutor of Fort Worth, Texas
When we investigated his background, we found out that he’d been illegally driving since he was about 13 years old. Just 4 months before this happened, he’s found taking a pee out by his pick-up truck. He’s got a passed-out half naked 15-year-old girl on the truck with him.

  【VO】
D.A. Alpert believed that the evidence was sufficient and the witness statements were clear in this case. Considering Ethan Couch’s multiple bad records, prosecutors charged him with four counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault, seeking a maximum sentence of 20 years of incarceration.

【Sound Bite】Richard Alpert, Prosecutor of Fort Worth, Texas
A young person does everything that Ethan did, and had done everything Ethan had done, I have no doubt that the position of the people on the State side will be that he need to be incarcerated.

  【VO】
Ethan Couch’s case was brought to trial. D.A. Alpert, once confident with the prosecution, began to realize that it would not be as easy to get an conviction as he expected.
Ethan Couch’s parents hired a top defense team. They paid great money to a psychologist who attached an unbelievable label on Couch’s behavior.
【Sound Bite】Richard Alpert, Prosecutor of Fort Worth, Texas
Keep in mind that we’re in a very small courtroom, much smaller than this, and the court room is full of family members of the victims, family members of the people that had been killed. So they are watching this proceeding, and this proported doctor, psychologist, gets up there and says that, this “affluenza” is the reason for it.

  【Sound Bite】News coverage
  Affluenza! Affluenza!
  Too rich for jail!
The lawyer told Judge Jean Boyd,
he was so rich, he didn’t know right from wrong.
  【VO】
This psychologist named Dick Miller claimed that Ethan Couch was a victim of “Affluenza”. He was raised in a rich family, and his parents gave him whatever he wants without disciplining him, which made him unaware of the outcomes of his behavior.
【Sound Bite】Richard Alpert, Prosecutor of Fort Worth, Texas
It was the stupidest thing we’ve ever heard of. The idea that, just because his parents had money and he was spoiled, that he gets a break, seems absolutely ridiculous.

  【VO】
Psychologist Miller asserted that Couch could reform himself once he receives psychologic treatment.

【Sound Bite】Richard Alpert, Prosecutor of Fort Worth, Texas
The judge decided to trust him for whatever reason. And that was wrong.

  【VO】
Judge Boyd sentenced Couch to six-month rehabilitation in a treatment center with probation of ten years.
Ethan Couch did not have to serve a single day in prison after he caused a deadly car crash after drinking which killed four people and wounded nine.
  【VO】
The sentence triggered tense rebellion among the victims’ families and the general public. The term Affluenza became notorious around the US.

  【Sound Bite】Sultan Mohmand,  Soloman’s father
It was just a slap on the back of his hand. That was it.
  【VO】
Half a year after the car crash, Couch appeared in a luxurious treatment center at a Southern California beach. He began to receive therapies including surfing, yoga and equestrian training.

【Sound Bite】Soloman Mohmand, Car accident victim
In my opinion, I think that money has really helped them, extremely a lot.
【Sound Bite】Richard Alpert, Prosecutor of Fort Worth, Texas
Being rich is obviously better than being poor, and being rich gives you more resources than otherwise. But the justice system sometimes works that way. People with less resource sometimes get less justice.
