Established in March 1993, the China Society for Human Rights Studies (CSHRS) is the largest national nongovernmental organization in the field of human rights in China. In December 1996, it was included in the World Directory of Human Rights Research and Training Institutions by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In 1998, it obtained a special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The CSHRS' principles:studying the theories, history, and status quo of human rights; exploring the development of human rights theories and practices; popularizing human rights knowledge; carrying out international exchange; increasing mutual understanding and cooperation in maintaining human rights between the Chinese and people of the rest of the world; and promoting the healthy development of China's and world's cause of human rights.
